Judy C was actually born Judy B but was alphabetically upgraded in 1987 when she married her husband & partner, visual artist Regi C.

Since she was a child, Judy was raised in the Church (so fundamental they pronounced it Choych, even though they lived in the great white north). Steeped in Old Timey Gospel music, silly with it in fact, she was taught to believe that only one type of music was  sacred & all else was taboo.

But her heart knew better than her head & she wasn't long into her teens before she would be sneaking audiences with the portable radio hidden in her dresser, and  like all other singers since the invention of the hairbrush she would croon & swoon to the songs of the latest teen sensation or crush de jour.

As she performed in and out of church her voice grew, as did her desire to express herself in more than one genre.  Throughout her college years the influence of Canadian Musicians like Bruce Cockburn & Leonard Cohen could be felt on a Nation. The little girl from Rosedale Street was hooked.

From the Soulful sounds of Luba, Sade & a host of others she has drawn her musical influence. Time & effort have shaped her voice into a vehicle that she continues to develop across the genres. 'Whether it be classic rock, jazz, roots or folk it's all about finding the color of the music & be it a jump tune or a Naw'leans funeral dirge, when I put my voice around the words, the song almost always comes out a little blue.'

The years after college saw her grinding away at the mill like so many, dreaming of being who you are seven days a week instead of just two.  Time marches on & along with it comes the voice of experience and  in her case, both the lyric & the melody are sweet, bittersweet.
